This blog will explore the baseball card collecting hobby of the 1980s, particularly highlighting the Chicago Cubs. Unlike vintage baseball cards, most modern cards are quite budget-friendly. The different sets will be much easier to find. Therefore, with thousands of cards in the mix, we will begin with the 80 Topps and conclude with the highly valuable 1985 Topps Mini Test. The pinnacle of this era was marked by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

Basic Features

The 1989 Swell Baseball Greats set contains 135 standard-size cards. The fronts have vintage photos with beige, red, and white borders. The horizontally oriented backs are white and scarlet and feature career highlights and lifetime stats. The set was produced by the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Corporation formed on August 12, 1947, to manufacture candy, chewing gum, and specialty confectionery products.

1989 Toys'R'Us Rookies Cubs Checklist

1989 Toys'R'Us Rookies had 33 cards in the set; which there are 4 Cub players.

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

There were a total of six boxed sets released by the toy store chain Toys ‘R Us, with the first coming in 1987.

There are 33 standard-size glossy cards in the 1989 Toys "R" Us Rookies collection. Red, and yellow make up the fronts. The blue and crimson, horizontally oriented backs include 1988 and career statistics on them. As a boxed set, the cards were sold through Toys "R" Us retail locations. The players are listed in alphabetical order. On the back panel of the customized box is a printed checklist.

If you're investing in a Mark Grace rookie, get a graded card from a reputable company to play it safe. One thing to consider is that graded cards keep their value longer and won't be fake.

1989 Topps Cap'n Crunch Cubs Checklist

1989 Topps Cap'n Crunch had 22 cards in the set; there is one Cub player.

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

The 1989 Topps Cap'n Crunch collection has 22 cards that are normal size. The "picture" images on the fronts are surrounded by red, white, and blue borders. The lifetime statistics are displayed on the horizontally oriented backs. The team logos were removed using airbrushing. Each specially marked Cap'n Crunch cereal box came with two cards (in a cellophane wrapper with a bit of gum).

Basic Features

With a full color action photo on the card front, the 33-card set highlights active big league players who have had seasons with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The Topps Ames 20/20 Club baseball card set is sold in boxed sets at Ames department shops. The Topps logo can be seen on the card face, and the cards are of normal size. On the backs are highlighted home run and stolen base totals for their 20/20 years, along with lifetime batting averages.Cards are arranged alphabetically. On the back panel of the customized box is a printed checklist.
