This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

The 1988 Fleer Baseball’s Best Sluggers vs. Pitchers boxed set, which included 44 standard-size cards, sets were sold in five-and-dime retail stores around the country. The cards feature full-color fronts with green and yellow outlines. The box for the cards describes the set as "1988 Fleer Baseball’s Best."The set's checklist is included on the back of the set box. Six stickers from the Fleer main collection from 1988 were also included. The bottoms of the boxes that held the individual set boxes also contained a panel of six cards; these box bottom cards were numbered C1 through C6.

1987 Fleer Classic Miniatures Chicago Cubs Checklist

1987 Fleer Mini had 120 cards, 5 of which are Cub players.

Card Dimensions

The smaller-sized cards are the following dimensions: 1 13/16" by 2 9/16"

Basic Features

The 1987 Fleer Mini is a boxed set of 120 cards that only loosely parallels the 1987 Fleer. Each card, which is officially referred to as the "Classic Miniatures," is 1 13/16" x 2 9/16" and was only available from Hobby Outlets. There were 12 mini-sized team logo stickers included in each package. On the reverse of the cards are statistics about the players' careers.

The 1988 Fleer Team Leaders boxed set, which included 44 standard-size cards, exclusive to Kay Bee Toys. The cards have a distinctive red border on the fronts. The Kay Bee logo is printed in the lower right corner of the obverse of each card. The card backs are numbered with a small bio and career stats. The box for the cards describes the set as the "1988 Fleer Team Leaders." The set's checklist is included on the back of the set box. 1987 Fleer Star Stickers Chicago Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

132 cards in the 1987 Fleer Star Stickers included 5 Cubs players.

The size of the cards are standard-size 2 ½ x 3 ½

Basic Features

Fleer released these star stickers as a stand-alone product; each wax pack included five stickers total, including a logo sticker. With its 2 1/2" by 3 1/2" full-color fronts and statistics on the sticker back, the 132-card (sticker) set shows that the Fleer Company recognizes that these stickers are more often utilized as traditional cards than as stickers. The backs are printed in green and yellow on white card paper, with a green border encircling the fronts. The player's name determines the alphabetical order of the numbers.

Unlike in previous years, Fleer did not produce an album.

1988 Fleer Star + Team Stickers Cubs Checklist

Basic Features

These Star Stickers were distributed as a separate issue by Fleer, with five star stickers and a logo sticker in each wax pack. The 132-card (sticker) set features 2 1/2" by 3 1/2" full-color fronts and even statistics on the sticker back, which is an indication that the Fleer Company understands that these stickers are rarely used as stickers but more like traditional cards. The fronts are surrounded by a silver-gray border and the backs are printed in red and black on white card stock. The set numbering is in alphabetical order within team and alphabetically by team within each league.
