Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

In 1981, Donruss made history by launching their very first baseball card collection. The front of these cards features exciting action shots, with many captured in the iconic Wrigley Field, most showing the butiful ivy, giving them a unique charm. At the bottom of each card, you can find the player's name and position. On the back of the cards, you'll see standard stats and player information, printed vertically in black against a red and white background. This special collection, named the "First Edition Collector Series," includes approximately 40 different versions that were later corrected for errors. Additionally, there are five checklist cards in the set that do not have numbers assigned to them.

Interestingly, this was the sole year that Donruss decided to include gum in their card packs. However, due to a legal battle with Topps, they had to make a change for the following year. Starting in 1982, Donruss began including puzzle pieces in their packs instead of gum. Despite this setback, the 1981 collection remains a significant milestone in the world of baseball card collecting. The attention to detail, from the action-packed front to the informative back, made these cards a favorite among collectors. The inclusion of Wrigley Field shots and the unique gum addition made this collection truly stand out in the history of baseball card production.
