Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1984 Topps Super Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

The 1984 Topps Super collection consists of 30 cards, with one card featuring a player from the Cubs team.

Card Dimensions

The super-sized cards are the following dimensions: 4 7/8″ by 6 7/8″

Basic Features

Apart from the measurements, all other aspects of the set mirror those of the original. The arrangement and visuals are identical. The sole discrepancy lies in the card number design. I am uncertain, but I believe this particular set did not receive a favorable response due to its size. Consequently, Topps refrained from producing another set of similar proportions for a considerable period.

1984 Topps Head-In-Box Proofs Cubs

Number of Cards

1984 Topps Head-In-Box Proofs has 66 cards, which there ia 1 Cubs player included.

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

A number of card test sheets were produced at the factory and subsequently divided into individual cards.

The front of the cards showcases an action-packed photo of the player, accompanied by a small portrait. The team name is prominently displayed in large letters along the left-hand border. Below the action photo, you will find the players' names and positions. The key distinction between this card and the main set is that the player's head is entirely positioned within the lower left-hand box, and the backs of the cards are left blank.

To prevent purchasing a false piece of history, always get a professionally graded card from a recognized provider. In the future, graded cards will be significantly more valuable.

1987 Topps Stickers + Hard Back Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

313 cards in the 1987 Topps Stickers collection included 11 Cubs players + 1 VAR.

Size of Cards

The size of the cards measure approximately 2 1/8" by 3"

Basic Features

Panini has manufactured these stickers in Italy for both Topps and O-Pee-Chee. These stickers showcase player photographs with white-bordered colors. They can be affixed onto an album that was available for purchase in stores. This set also includes the popular All-Star Players subset, which features a foil border. On the back of the Topps stickers, you will find enticing offers to either win a trip for four to Spring Training with the team of your preference or acquire a complete set of Topps baseball cards directly from Topps.

O-Pee-Chee was exactly the same as the Topps set except that the horizontal backs carry a bilingual ad for O-Pee-Chee.

Panini's production of Topps and OPC's sticker set would come to an end in this year, as they would obtain their own license for 1988. Consequently, a scarce "hardback" version of this set emerged. The hardbacks, akin to the stickers Topps started manufacturing in 1988, were printed on a sturdier cardstock instead of the thinner paper stock used by Panini. It is speculated that the hardbacks served as a trial release and virtually identical to the more common Panini edition except for the copyright line on the back.
