Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1987 Topps Chicago Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

1987 Topps has 797 cards which there are 28 Cubs players and 5 Traded cards

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

Card fronts feature wood grain borders encasing a color photo (reminiscent of Topps' classic 1962 baseball set). The box used for the player photo has the top-left corner cut off where a team logo sits inside a circle. The bottom-right corner is similarly cut off, giving the rectangular nameplate space to overlap.

Backs use a mostly yellow and blue theme. The top has the player name, position, and card number in a strip. Below that is a large box with complete major and minor league stats as well as, space permitting, a short bio. A bottom strip has the player's vital info.

Subsets include
  • Record Breakers (1-7)
  • Turn Back the Clock (311-315)
  • All-Star selections (595-616)
  • Team Leaders (scattered throughout the set)

Notable Cubs Rookies Cards

To prevent purchasing a false piece of history, always get a professionally graded card from a recognized provider. In the future, graded cards will be significantly more valuable.
