Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1984 Drakes Big Hitters Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

1984 Drake's Big Hitters has 33 cards, two of which are Cubs players.

Size of Cards

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

Food cards from the early twentieth century to the present have a devoted following among collectors. This is only one of hundreds of strange sets available. There are some weird sets that are extremely difficult to obtain or extremely rare, but not this one.

Baseball cards have been packed as a promotional component in food products for decades. Drake's Bakery decided to try to capitalize on Hostess' popularity with baseball cards and baked products in 1981.

For the fourth year, Drake's Cakes has issued a set dubbed "Big Hitters." Drake's Cakes has released its fourth annual Collectors Edition of baseball cards, called "Big Hitters." The front displays a frameline with the set's title, Drake's logo, and the player's name, team, and position, like in previous years. On all of the cards, the player is depicted in a batting posture. The card fronts differ from this year's Topps fronts, but the backs are identical, except for the card number and the use of the Drake logo instead of the Topps logo.

If you've observed, the set includes a new Cubs player in Ron Cey. This will be Buckner's final appearance in a Cubs uniform. The main reason for this was that Dallas Green had begun looking for a buyer for Buckner, and on May 25, 1984, he negotiated a trade with the Red Sox in exchange for Dennis Eckersley and Mike Brumley.
