Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1982 Cubs Red Lobster

1982 Cubs Red Lobster #23 Ryne Sandberg

This set contains Ryno's first cub card and predates his Donruss, Fleer, and Topps Rookie Cards by one year. The cards were co-produced by the Cubs and Chicago-area Red Lobster restaurants and were introduced as a promotional giveaway on August 20, 1982, at Wrigley Field. A facsimile autograph appears on the front, and the cards run in sequence by uniform number. While the coaches have a short biographical sketch on the back, the player cards simply list the individual's professional record. The key card in the set is obviously Ryne Sandberg's, as Lee Smith also appears in this set in his rookie card year.
