Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will explore the baseball card collecting hobby of the 1980s, particularly highlighting the Chicago Cubs. Unlike vintage baseball cards, most modern cards are quite budget-friendly. The different sets will be much easier to find. Therefore, with thousands of cards in the mix, we will begin with the 80 Topps and conclude with the highly valuable 1985 Topps Mini Test. The pinnacle of this era was marked by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1987 Smokey Bear Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

The 1987 Smokey Bear National League set included 15 cards, one of which was a Cub.

Size of Cards

Oversized cards are the following dimensions: 4” by 6”

Basic Features

The American Forestry Service designed the set, which has baseball players posing with Smokey Bear, to increase public awareness of forest fires.

The player's name and the emblem of his team were printed at the bottom of each card, which featured a picture of the player standing next to Smokey Bear. A total of 25,000 sets were distributed. A rare card in this set is Jody Davis (Standing).

The set includes 31 4" by 6" cards that are cut from sheets measuring 18" by 24" for players in the American League and 20" by 18" for those in the National League. The NL sheets only had 15 cards, whereas each AL sheet had 16 cards on a perforated sheet.

To prevent purchasing a false piece of history, always get a professionally graded card from a recognized provider. In the future, graded cards will be significantly more valuable.
