Basic Features

Food cards from the early twentieth century to the present have a devoted following among collectors. This is only one of hundreds of strange sets available. There are some weird sets that are extremely difficult to obtain or extremely rare, but not this one.

Baseball cards have been packed as a promotional component in food products for decades. Drake's Bakery decided to try to capitalize on Hostess' popularity with baseball cards and baked products in 1980s.

The 8th annual edition of this 33-card set comprises 27 elite batters and six top pitchers. The cards were to be cut by hand from the boxes. The face of the card displays a color photo of the player with the Drakes emblem and the player's team, position, and name at the bottom. Year-by-year season data may be found on the backs of the cards. Top hitters 1–27 and pitchers 28–33 are mentioned numerically last on the cards. Drake's continued to produce promotional card sets from 1986 through 1988, although they were no longer affiliated with Topps. On the backs of Drake's bakery products, cards were printed in groupings of two, three, or four.

The panal breakdown is 1-2 Ring Dings, 3-4 Devil Dogs, 5-6 Coffee Cakes, 7-9 Yankee Doodles, 10-11 Funny Bones, 12-14 Fudge Brownies, 15-18 Cherry Pies, 19-21 Sunny Doodles, 22-24 Powdered Sugar Donuts, 25-27 Chocolate Donuts, 28-29 Yodels, and 30-33 Apple Pies.
