Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will explore the baseball card collecting hobby of the 1980s, particularly highlighting the Chicago Cubs. Unlike vintage baseball cards, most modern cards are quite budget-friendly. The different sets will be much easier to find. Therefore, with thousands of cards in the mix, we will begin with the 80 Topps and conclude with the highly valuable 1985 Topps Mini Test. The pinnacle of this era was marked by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1989 Topps Baseball Talk Ryne Sandberg

Number of Cards

1989 Topps Baseball Talk set has 164 cards which there are 7 Cub players

Card Dimensions

The cards are the following dimensions: 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" slightly oversized

Basic Features

Most cards featured a picture of the baseball player's Topps rookie card on the front. The player's entire statistics were listed on the back of the card, and a plastic phonograph disc was adhered to the card and played about two and a half minutes of audio.

It was a 1989 Topps design, however Ryne Sandberg's card had an entirely different photo from his standard card from that year. For some reason, Topps didn't use his rookie card from 1983.

The battery-powered LJN Sportstalk player was a basic gadget. When the card was inserted, a stylus rotated beneath to play the disc while the image on the card was displayed under a clear plastic cover.

1987 Donruss Super DK's Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

1987 Donruss Super DK's set has 28 cards which there was one Cubs player

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

This 28-card set was offered as part of a mail-in promotion that was described on the wax packs. The set includes Diamond King subseries (approximately 4 7/8" x 6 13/16"), which are essentially larger versions of the Diamond Kings. The original artwork from which these cards were derived was created by Dick Perez of Perez-Steele Galleries. Any Dick Perez, in my opinion, is worth collecting.

Remember, these are hard to store because of their size.

Number of Cards

1985 Donruss Highlights set has 56 cards which there was one Cubs player

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

In November, the 1985 Donruss Highlights package was released, and it quickly became highly well-liked. In actuality, before all of the orders could be filled, the product was sold out. The 56-card set included pictures of players who received various honors throughout the season. The NL and AL Player and Pitcher of the Month awards were given out most frequently. The final two cards displayed the Donruss projections for the Rookie of the Year from both leagues, while other cards highlighted a variety of career accomplishments. The set also came with a small puzzle featuring Lou Gehrig in addition to the cards.

The team emblem was changed to a "Highlights" logo in the bottom right corner of the card, and the border stripes were yellow/gold instead of red as in the flagship design.

1985 Donruss Highlights #41 Andre Dawson If you're a big Dawson collector, I would put this card in your collection. His accomplishment was hitting two home runs in the same inning twice, one of those at Wrigley.

1989 Chicago Cubs Rookie Cards

Because they are the first cards that feature a player in their first year of being part of a significant set, rookie cards are cool. Collecting is enjoyable, and the value of some of those rookies increases significantly over time.

If you're investing in a rookie card, you may want to consider getting a graded card from a reputable company to play it safe. One thing to consider is that graded cards keep their value longer and won't be fake.

Rookie Card: A player's first base card(s) in a regular issued, fully-licensed card set.

Due to the lack of league and team licensing, many of the cards created by Classic + Panini with others are not recognized rookie cards. For this reason, a lot of the players in these sets are still seen wearing their collegiate and high school regalia. I refer to them as pre-rookies. These cards are not considered rookies in this ranking.

A new set of player selection guidelines from Major League Baseball Properties (MLB) and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) went into effect with the 2006 season. Only players who have actually participated in a Major League game will be permitted to appear in an MLB/MLBPA sanctioned base set going forward. Look for the new standardized, cross-brand "Rookie Card" icon on their cards.
