Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1983 TCMA Playball 1943 Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

1983 TCMA Playball 1943 has 45 cards which there are 3 Cubs players

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"

Basic Features

This 45-card standard-size set, which has sepia-toned posed and action player photographs with white borders, was produced by TCMA in 1983. The player's name is displayed in a black-outline banner at the bottom, which also features icons of a baseball glove, bat, ball, and catchers' mask. The cardboard backs have a navy blue print and display a player profile, a biography, and a Playball commercial. Each TCMA Playball set cost $4 and could be purchased straight from TCMA.

TCMA is the initials of founders Tom Collier and Michael Aronstein

I enjoy collecting this set because it contains several under-the-radar players from earlier decades. Who knew Swish had four years in a row with more than 100 RBIs?

1980 Exhibit Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

Exhibit had 64 cards in 1980, there are 4 Cub players.

Size of Cards

The cards are the following dimensions: 3 3/8" x 5 3/8"

Basic Features

Founded in 1901, the Exhibit Supply Company, or ESCO, produced vending machines (candy, claw machines, shooters, strength testers, and fortune tellers). In 1921, this company started to print novelty picture cards. These pitcure were designed exclusively for ESCO’s own dispensing machines. From 1921 to 1928, baseball exhibits were of single players. In 1929  ESCO went to the four players on one card format. However, by 1939, they were back to one player per card and generally printing 32 cards at a time.

The 1980 Exhibit baseball card set, consisting of 32 cards, is limited to 7,500 made (2500 each color), and measures 3 3/8" x 5 3/8". The cards feature photos from earlier issues and were printed in red, blue, and brown. The bottom reads, "An Exhibit Card, 1980."

An additional set of 32 Hall of Fame cards were made, which were also re-issues of the original exhibit cards, for a total of 64 cards issued in 1980.

The cards have blank backs, and the players are arranged in alphabetical order. The HOF cards have a few players on other teams that were originally Cubs players.

Card Dimensions

The standard-sized cards are the following dimensions: 2-1/2" by 3-1/2"
