Welcome Cubs Fans!

This blog will discuss the 1980s and the baseball card collecting hobby, with a focus on the Chicago Cubs. Contrary to vintage baseball cards, the majority of modern cards are affordable. The various sets will be considerably simpler to obtain. So, with thousands of cards in between, we'll start with 80 Topps and end with 89 Upper Deck. The apex of this period was represented by the Sandberg Rookie of the Year in 1983.

1989 Weis MSA Iced Tea Discs and Tetley Tea Discs

20 disks in the 1989 Weis MSA Iced Tea collection included 1 Cubs player.

Size of Cards

The size of the disks are approximately 2 5/8" in diameter

Basic Features

On their fronts posed color player head shots within red stars on yellow backgrounds. The player's name and team appear in black lettering near the bottom. There are no team logos featured on the discs. The backs carry player biography and 1988 statistics in blue lettering. The cards are numbered on the back as "X of 20." The sets were also produced under the Tetley Teas label and inserted into their tea bag boxes.

1989 Topps Hills Team MVP's Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

33 cards in the 1989 Topps Hills Team MVP's collection included 1 Cubs player.

The size of the cards are standard-size 2 ½ x 3 ½

Basic Features

This glossy boxed set was produced by Topps for the Hills chain of department stores. Ireland was the location where the set was printed. The fronts and backs are blue, white, red, and yellow. The backs are green and positioned horizontally. Some collectors just have sets that are printed in Ireland, while others may just collect a player from a set. I do both.

1989 Topps Coins Cubs Checklist

Number of Coins

The 1989 Topps Coins collection contains 60 coins which there are 2 Cubs players.

Size of Cards

The size of the coins are approximately 1 1/2" in diameter.

Basic Features

The coins were distributed in three-coin packages. The collection is organized according to league order, with the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young Award Winner, Rookie of the Year, and Batting Leaders appearing first, followed by an alphabetical list of the other members of the league. There are 1–28 players in the National League and 29–60 players in the American League.
